MEETING FOUR   THREE WORKING DAYS 30TH JULY – 2ND AUGUST 2009 BREGENZ

Objectives:

Episode 7

  • To provide  non-EU participants with contextual Bregenz/EU cultural experiences
  • To hold  a series of exploratory performance workshops
  • For these workshops to form the basis for public performance, which will stage the results of the encounters in a way that fully addresses the artistic and emotional experience of the audience
  • To explore the different training techniques required & explore ways of using the differences as a pedagogic route to getting students and young people to think about the nature of music via a radically different tradition
  • To continue the interchanges on  the individual foci of participant groups
  • To document the processes on film, photograph and paper.

Afternoon

  • Meeting with local music and arts promoter Spielboden Dornbirn : an introduction to an independent arts approach and the links to Bregenzer Festspiele
  • Artistic ideals of BF with David Poultney, (Artistic Director), Susanne Schmidt ( Opera Director) Laura Berman (Artistic Director of Arts of Our Times programme) , and  Dorothée Schaeffer, (CrossCulture  – education and outreach programme)

ALL

Evening  Semper Dowland & The Corridor by Sir Harrison Birtwhistle;     a performance in the  “Arts of Our Times” programme

Saturday 1st August

CAT     (all day)  performance workshops

CCG –     morning: meeting on possibilities of student work placements at  BF with  (unexpectedly) Managing Director Michael Diem

               Attend performance of King Roger by Karol Szymanowski

ALL lunch –.    Guests: Sir Mark Elder, (conductor of King Roger)  Guang Yang (artist)

CCG – afternoon  

–            Visit  to Kunsthaus Bregenz – Antony Gormely exhibition with special explanatory tour and discussion

  • Future planning: Autumn 2009,  Shanghai 2010      (Chair T Cantell)
  • Excursion to Alpe Rothenbach – opportunities for social interaction with hosts and for informal discussion

All   Evening

  • Presentation of performance Workshop (CAT) discussion to invited audience including  The Bregenzer Festspiele staff that had made presentations previously in the week, Dr David Jhiang (Director & Visiting Research Fellow UoL)
  • Dinner – hosted by Bregenzer Festspiele
  • Floating  stage   – Aida by Giuseppe Verdi;
  • After-Show drinks reception reception joined by other colleagues from Bregenzer Festspiele
